NY Governor Announces USD$10 Bln JFK Airport Upgrade

January 4, 2017

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced a USD$10 billion plan to upgrade New York’s JFK Airport, which includes linking the terminals and redesigning road access and parking.

"Our vision plan calls for the creation of a unified, interconnected airport that changes the passenger experience and makes the airport much easier to access and navigate,” Governor Cuomo said.

Terminals will be updated, some expanded and some relocated at a cost of $8 billion. Shopping, food and beverage outlets will be improved, and conference and meeting room facilities added.

A further $2 billion will be spent on improving roads, including adding lanes to the Van Wyck Expressway access road. A ring road concept will improve access to the terminals.

Parking will be expanded within the terminal ring road, with more options to be made available.

There are also plans to improve rail travel, including doubling the capacity of the existing AirTrain, and improving the MTA’s subway and LIRR connections at Jamaica Station.

The airport improvements are based on recommendations made by the Governor’s Airport Advisory Panel.

The number of passengers at JFK is expected to grow to 75 million by 2030 and 100 million by 2050. The current airport facilities will reach capacity by the mid-2020s.
