Delta, Alaska Air To End Codeshare Agreement

December 19, 2016

Delta Air Lines and Alaska Air will end their codeshare agreement in 2017 as their relationship becomes “increasingly competitive.”

Delta said in a statement that the agreement will end on April 30, 2017 and sales of codeshare flights will cease from then. Frequent flyer miles will not be able to be earned or redeemed on Alaska Air codeshare flights from May 1.

Delta said the change was positive as it focuses on creating more customer choice at its SeaTac Airport hub.

Alaska Air’s managing director, alliances Charles Breer said “This should come as no surprise as our relationship [with Delta] has become increasingly competitive over the last few years.

“With the recent acquisition of Virgin America, we’re now the fifth largest airline in the US. We offer more nonstop West Coast departures than any other airline.”

Alaska Air received US Department of Transportation approval earlier this month for the takeover of Virgin America. The combined carrier will operate around 1,200 flights per day with a fleet of 286 aircraft.
