Thomas Cook, the troubled travel group has appointed a former food company executive as its new chairman, according to the Financial Times.

The paper reports that Frank Meysman, 59, from Belgium will take over from the current chairman Michael Beckett when he retires in December.

The report said that Meysman was picked over the other shortlisted candidate Sir David Michels, the veteran leisure industry executive who is on the Marks & Spencer board and who until last month was vice-chairman of easyJet.

Mr Meysman most recently worked as executive vice-president of Sara Lee, the food maker. He has also worked for Douwe Egberts and Proctor & Gamble.

Nicholas Bartram, an analyst at Peel Hunt was quoted as saying that Mr Meysman's appointment is the first of a long list of changes needed at the travel business.

Last month Thomas Cook parted with its head of UK retail after the division underperformed both its rivals and analysts expectations.
