Italian airline Alitalia said on Thursday it had suspended flights to Libya's capital Tripoli indefinitely for security reasons.

In a statement, the airline said that the ability of passengers to reach embarkation gates at Tripoli airport was compromised, domestic and international telephone connections were not working and security, baggage handling and passenger assistance services were at risk.

It said it remained in contact with the foreign ministry and would operate special flights to evacuate Italian citizens if necessary.
