Spanish airline Iberia's recently appointed chairman, Antonio Vazquez, declined to comment on reports he was keen to step up merger talks with British Airways.

BA and Iberia will hold a series of meetings in September with the aim of reaching a new pre-agreement on the merger before the end of the month, newspaper ABC reported on Tuesday, without naming sources.

"There is nothing new. It would be news if we were not talking," Iberia chairman Antonio Vazquez told journalists on Tuesday.

The merger talks began in June 2008 between Vazquez's predecessor Fernando Conte and BA chief executive Willie Walsh.
