Jet2.com, a UK low fare leisure airline, has unveiled Glasgow Airport as its eighth base in a move that creates 150 jobs.

The airline will offer the only direct service to Nice as well as direct flights to Alicante, Dalaman, Faro, Tunisia, Majorca, Paphos, Sharm el Sheikh and Tenerife.

Flights will start operating from March 2011.

One 757 and one 737 aircraft will be based at Glasgow from the launch in March 2011.

Ian Doubtfire, managing director of Jet2.com said: "It has been a turbulent time for the travel industry with some airlines and operators ceasing to trade this year.

"In contrast, we have continued to go from strength to strength – including the launch of a new base at East Midlands Airport this time last year and significant growth from our existing airport bases.

"There is a considerable gap in the market at Glasgow Airport which we intend to fill," he said.

Since its launch in early 2003, Jet2.com has flown 20 million people to 50 destinations mainly across Europe but also including New York.
