Tokyo Electric Power, Japan's top utility, said on Wednesday it would team up with trading house Mitsui on a solar power project to supply part of the electricity at Tokyo's Haneda Airport.
The companies will build a 2 megawatt solar system on the roof of an international freight terminal scheduled to start operations in October 2010, TEPCO said in a statement.
The facility will generate about 2 million kilowatt-hours a year, accounting for about 10 percent of the terminal's annual power needs. The facility is projected to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by about 850 tons a year, TEPCO said.
Japanese utilities are aiming to cut CO2 emissions per kilowatt-hour by 20 percent over the five business years that started in April, compared with 1990 levels.
