A suspicious suitcase that triggered an alert at Miami International Airport on Thursday turned out to contain a portable music player, a large battery and a bar of soap, police said.
Security screeners saw an alarming X-ray image when they scanned the suitcase checked by a Jamaica-bound passenger, police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said. They closed part of the airport's baggage claim area for 90 minutes and summoned the Miami-Dade Police bomb squad.
The bag's contents were harmless and police who interviewed the owner decided she had innocently packed the large, square lantern-type battery with her soap and music player, which was connected by wires to her earphones.
"When you see something like that, you don't take any chances," Zabaleta said.
The passenger was allowed to board her plane, and an airport spokesman said flight schedules were not affected. Police said initial reports that a suspicious smell prompted the alert turned out to be mistaken.
