Bangladeshi Airport Reopens After Runway Cleared

Bangladesh's southeastern Chittagong Airport was reopened on Sunday, nine days after an airliner was badly damaged after skidding while landing, officials said.

"The airport is fully operational since this morning, and we are ready to handle regional and international flights," said Squadron Leader Shaheen Farhand, manager of the Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport.

The airport was closed after a Biman Airlines DC-10-30 carrying 215 people skidded off the runway while landing in rain on July 1.

The 201 passengers and 14 crew escaped unhurt via the emergency exit of the aircraft, which was from Dubai enroute to its final destination at Dhaka's Zia International Airport. A wing and engine of the aircraft were badly damaged.

The airport was ready for operation after the aircraft, which had been stuck in mud, was removed, officials said.

Bangladesh's Biman and Thai Airways International operates regional and international flights from Chittagong Airport, 300 km (187 miles) from the capital, Dhaka.
