Royal Jordanian Resumes Baghdad Flights

Royal Jordanian resumed daily flights to Baghdad on Wednesday after the US military lifted a ban on commercial flights imposed three days ago on security grounds, an airline official said.

US military authorities gave Royal Jordanian and other airlines clearance but provided no details about their original security concerns, the official said.

Iraqi insurgents often fire mortar bombs at Baghdad Airport.

Royal Jordanian operated an extra flight on Wednesday in addition to its two daily flights to Baghdad to cope with passenger demand, the official added.

RJ was the first commercial airline to resume flights to Baghdad after the US-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003.

Many Westerners, such as contractors and diplomats, travel by air to Iraq after a wave of kidnappings and shootings of foreigners driving by car on the land route from Jordan.
