United To Retire Boeing 747 Jumbos Early

January 11, 2017

United Airlines will retire its remaining Boeing 747s earlier than planned, according to the airline’s president Scott Kirby.

Kirby wrote in his company blog that “we're saying farewell to the Queen of the Skies, which has been part of our fleet since we first flew the aircraft between California and Hawaii in 1970.”

He said that the planned retirement, originally scheduled for the end of 2018 will be brought forward to the fourth quarter of this year.

United has 20 747-400s currently in service.
