London City Runway Cleared, Flights Resume

September 6, 2016

The runway at London City Airport has been cleared after protesters locked themselves together and caused the cancellation of over a hundred flights.

“Nine protesters arrested and removed from runway @LondonCityAir - protest has now concluded,” London’s Metropolitan Police said on Twitter.

A police statement that they’d been called to the airport at 5:40 on Tuesday morning after nine protestors from the Black Lives Matter group swam across the dock and accessed the runway.

“Officers negotiated with the protestors and specialist officers arrived to 'unlock' the protestors,” a police statement said. “All have now been removed from the runway and taken into police custody.”

The airport said the runway is now open and apologised for the inconvenience caused. Passengers were advised to check with their airline for latest flight information.
